We all have good reason to be grateful for the gap that exists between thought and action. It’s into that gap that we insert reason. It’s where common sense also sits waiting to be called upon when a decision needs to be made.
That gap, however, can either be appreciated and utilised or ignored and rejected. It all comes down to the choice of the individual. And that is a point that warrants more appreciation…the fact that we get to choose.
If there was no gap then random thoughts would immediately convert into physical or emotional action. We would be controlled by our thoughts when it is the opposite that is required when it comes to the issue of mental wellbeing.
The power we have is the capacity to decide on our path of action following the occurrence of a thought.
Just as we are not controlled by our thoughts, we are not defined by our thoughts. We are what we do. We are what happens at the end of a thought process not what we are at the start.
Part of that process must be consideration of consequence. There is an issue of responsibility that we, ultimately, are unable to sidestep.
While it’s altogether possible to overthink as much as it’s possible to underthink, the key action is simply to think. And we need to think about the thoughts we are having before deciding whether or not they are reasonable and actionable.
Indecision can be far more damaging than decision. What we do can always be enhanced or modified. What we choose not to do does nothing for us and takes us nowhere.
We may seek the knowledge and guidance of others but personal choice is exclusively our own.
