The most disturbing aspect of time is that none of us knows how much we have. The length of a lifespan – whether brief or extended – can be surprising…but only to survivors.
The certainty we have is in the moment – here and now. There are no promises and precious few assurances when it comes to considering what is likely to happen next.
That should add a degree of urgency to everyday existence. There are things that should be done while other concerns are of less importance.
But we all have a tendency towards procrastination. We seek excuses in order to sidestep that which we know needs to be done. Rarely is that more relevant than it is when it comes to personal relationships. We have a tendency to believe that if we look away from a problem then it will somehow cease to exist. Selective ignorance, however, is no answer.
Time waits for no-one. It is relentless and uncompromising. And when it is gone for an individual it is gone forever.
It’s not possible to live a faultless, perfect existence. We are human. We make mistakes. Some of those mistakes can never be put right. There are failings we have to live with.
There is much, though, that can be done if we have the head and the heart to make a commitment.
It starts with prioritising…a list of those things we know we can change or improve. That must be followed by action.
Not everything wrong can be put right but it is important that the effort starts today.
Tomorrow isn’t promised to anyone.
