Knowing what to believe these days is difficult. It largely depends on who we believe.
Not believing something until we actually saw it was once a reasonably safe bet. If we could see the evidence we could judge its authenticity. If the visual evidence was lacking there was reason for doubt.
Things have changed. We now live in an era where we are unable to trust everything we see and it is increasingly difficult to trust everything we hear.
Face value has been devalued. The truth is out there somewhere…but where?
Doubt is feeding paranoia and that, in turn, is undermining self confidence and damaging relationships.
Given that there is so much happening around us that we are unable to control or direct it is essential that we refine our defences.
Gullibility is one of our worst enemies.
There are many people, organisations and institutions that continue to prove their honesty and reliability. There are others that have many blots on their copybook.
Mistakes happen. They can be understood and forgiven. Deceit is deliberate, calculated and damaging.
What’s necessary these days is a deeper dive in a bid to separate truth from lies; fact from fiction.
In order to equip ourselves we need to ensure that we are not deceiving ourselves. We need to be honest with the person we know ourself to be.
It’s when we deal with our inner turmoil that we build the strength and the clarity to deal with that which is happening around us.
At least that much is within our control.
