Opinion And The Forgotten Facts

We live in a world where, all too often, opinion is given more credibility than fact.

What once was news is now commentary and the judgement of a few is presented as the consensus of many.

The more we hear it the more likely we are to believe it no matter how far-fetched, obscure or incorrect it is.

The result is widespread confusion which leads to mental anguish and a quick trip down the short road to anxiety then on to depression.

Too many have lost contact with both commonsense and discernment. So thick have the trees become that they can no longer see the forest.

Acceptance without question is not the answer. Concession without challenge is what the  opinionated want – particularly those with an agenda.

The problem with an opinion is that it can be wrong. Sincerity is not necessarily a good rule of thumb. It should never be a matter of who is making the most noise, it should always be a matter of who is making the most sense.

One thing more potentially dangerous than an opinion is no opinion at all. It’s true that those who stand for nothing will fall for anything.

An opinion can be little more than an interpretation or a perception of a fact or facts. As such it can vary from individual to individual. A fact, however, is a reality or a truth…something either known to exist or to have happened.

But while a fact can be described as a truth, the truth is no longer always an acceptable defence.

It can be altogether too easy to lose touch with the reality that surrounds us; to be overwhelmed by the noise and distraction.

It can be altogether too easy to lose touch with ourselves and lose our way.

To thine own self be true.

  1. Fabulously timely reminder in the world today where we are overwhelmed with “fake news” and opinions everywhere from anyone – facts are facts, opinions are not facts! Nicely put.
