Clearing The Clutter

The more we possess the more we want in the mistaken belief that the more we have the more fulfilled we will become.

We live in a competitive world where the measure of success is all too often based on what we have managed to accumulate. The universally embraced belief is the bigger and better the pile the bigger and better the person. But for a belief to become a certainty it needs proof. In this case the proof clearly outweighs the belief.

There is a point where need gives way to greed and the further we move beyond that point the more difficult it can become to find completion and peace. The quest to find contentment all too often results in complication and confusion.

The problem is that we hold on to things that we should let go. When it comes to possessions that much is obvious, There is a tendency to hoard…to retain things well beyond their usefulness and past their use-by date.

Far more difficult to realise and accept is our tendency to stockpile negativity. Our heads and our hearts can become cluttered by emotions and memories that weigh us down. We fill up the empty spaces with unresolved issues…things we choose to avoid…issues we are too afraid to confront.

We run the danger of being so distracted by disarray that we are unable to see the good and positive things happening to us and around us. Even if we do catch a glimpse of something the likelihood that we can not only hold on to it but also find somewhere to put it is limited by our self-imposed restrictions.

It’s important that we take time to step back and assess our physical environment. It’s even more important to do a regular stock-take of our psychological space.

Commit to clearing the clutter.
