Throughout life we encounter individuals and organisations that seek to control us…entities that clamour to boost their own damaged or inadequate self esteem by cannibalising the security of self of others.
The danger is that there are many people who have little more than a tenuous grip on the person they believe themselves to be. If we lack a clear perception and understanding of who we are then we are almost assuredly bound to fall short of maximising the potential of becoming who we could be.
The good news is that an opportunity missed need not be an opportunity wasted. We can learn from our mistakes and use that knowledge to make more informed decisions in the future. And chances to revisit, revise and remodel often present themselves.
We get to choose…and we get to choose at any and every stage of our lives. An essential, though, is the security of self.
It takes time and effort to come to a full understanding and appreciation of our own opinions, attitudes and reactions. But knowing what we think and what we do with what we think is not enough. We must also understand why we think the way we do. It’s necessary to get back to basics to be able to build or repair a sound foundation.
It’s vital that we feel safe with the person we have created because the person we have created is the person we are unable to avoid. Wherever we go, there we are. Any time, any place.
And while there are some vehement arguments that surround the influences of nature and nurture, most caught up in the debate set aside the matter of choice.
In the final analysis it is the responsibility of the individual to accept responsibility for the person they have allowed themselves to be.
The choice is ours.
Absolutely there is more to who you are than nature/nurture. Environmental and situational factors and a myriad of external life influencers – but you’re right – all of this leads to the individual and how they deal with life – a constant work in progress that requires vulnerability and lack of ego.
