A Work In Progress

Not every decision we make will be the right decision. Not every choice will be the correct one.

A gut reaction can be the wrong reaction. A carefully thought out and planned move can have a result that falls well short of expectation…or misses the mark completely.

We can be confused by emotions. We can be distracted by situations and circumstances. We can, do and will fail.

Every one of us is flawed…incomplete…a work in progress.

What categorises people is their capacity to cope with disappointment. And that is dictated by reaction to failure or unmet expectations.

The good news is that coping mechanisms, systems and methods exist…all tried, true, proven and available.

It’s not always possible to avoid falling down but we can learn ways to pick ourselves back up again. There are always opportunities and alternatives. While we are unable to retell the part of the story already told it is within our reach to avoid repetition and help structure fresh new chapters for today and tomorrow.

Ultimately the choice rests with the individual. We all must own those things that hold us back or cause us to blunder. Toxic behaviours and attitudes are personal. Our failings start and end with ourselves. No-one can change them for us.

The decision is ours and ours alone.

And even when the decision proves to be the wrong one we can learn from our mistake. We can correct, redirect, refocus and relaunch. And we can keep doing that until we get it right.

There will always be those who offer criticism just as there will always those who offer advice and guidance. We can accept or reject.

But if we do nothing more than strive to be a better person today than we were yesterday then we will grow, achieve and lead a better life.

We are responsible for our own happiness.

  1. Happiness is the holy grail of life. Striving for it by looking inwards rather than outwards may just get us closer – well said!
