The real world is the space we physically occupy and share. It’s where we live and work. It’s where we show our public face. At the same time, we all live in our own world. That’s where we have our thoughts and desires. That’s our private face.
Key to our psychological wellbeing is the effort we put into achieving the right blend of both worlds. Some are more successful than others. There are those who struggle and suffer while others live a less stressful life.
The key is recognising and accepting that, while the two worlds we all occupy co-exist and are inescapable they are not inseparable.
We have limited control over the real world because the real world is the result of many different people making many different decisions directed by many different motivations and fuelled by many different emotions.
Our own world is a world of our own creation. It’s uniquely individual and highly personal. As such it is within our reach to control and direct. We get to choose. We get the responsibility and we get the consequences.
Living is all about what the real world throws at us and how we use the resources of own world in response. It’s not simply about what happens in the real world. It’s about how we react and deal with it in our world.
To a greater or lesser degree it’s possible to escape the real world…to go into isolation…to hide away…to refuse to participate. But it’s impossible to escape our own world. We are able to hide from everyone but ourselves. Wherever we go there we are.
We can put real effort into the real world in an effort to make it a better place.
We must put real effort into our world. We can always be a better person.
Yes! I would venture that going into your own world, isolating and excluding outside influences may be as detrimental as never entering your mind or addressing your inner self – perhaps being in both worlds may lead to a balanced and healthy existence.
