Memories of that part of our lives already lived are a mixture of happiness and sadness, victory and defeat, loss and gain. Our experiences are ours and ours alone. We are all unique and it is that uniqueness that sets our experiences apart. While there are times of unity – crossed paths that occasionally give us some common ground with others – we choose whether or not we draw positivity or negativity from our past.
There can be a problem when we deliberately view that which has already happened through the prism of the present. Recollections can easily be distorted and distortions impact perceptions. So great can that impact be that the result is a focus on bad experiences with its accompanying pain and sadness. That pain and sadness can distract us from the promise of the present. Emotion – intended to be an expression of our humanity – can become a burden.
Life is an endless chain of decision and consequence. And that, in equal parts, can be both frightening and exciting.
But what is offered to us is opportunity…the chance to change both our intent and direction. We can regather, regroup and relaunch. We can decide to alter our attitude and our direction. We can take charge of the next chapter of our life’s story.
The catch is that no-one else can make those changes for us just as no-one else could have made past decisions on our behalf. Neither can anyone else be made responsible for the consequences of our actions.
Life can happen…and it will happen – around us, to us and through us. But we have the chance to make life happen..to alter, improve and enjoy.
That then becomes the ultimate challenge…to really live the life we have been given…to accept and learn from the past and to embrace the present.
Every day is a new opportunity.
Powerful statement – emotion intended to be part of our humanity – words to strive for, live by and be proud of. Wonderful.
