We Have Today

Life is an endless tussle between resolution and resolution avoidance. The former is ultimately unavoidable, the latter a source of continual frustration.

There will ever be situations and circumstances that surround and include us that need more work. Perfection may be the ideal. Reality dictates that it’s rarely achievable.

The most difficult truth most of us struggle with is the fact that so much of life is beyond our control or influence. What we want is often something we will never have because it’s none of our business. Acceptance can be difficult.

In the meantime we can be haunted by past mistakes, errors of judgement or bad calls. Unfinished work has a way of tracking us down and demanding a conclusion. Those things either long ignored or long forgotten can materialise at the most inappropriate times. We are locked into the belief that our life story should have a beginning, a middle and an end. The belief in an ordered sequence can be a burden. Realisation that, at any time, it’s possible to rewrite what we had thought was the inevitably of our story and therefore our existence can be the freedom so many of us seek.

We are the product of many influences, a significant one being our past. There will always be things we could have done better; choices we wish we had never made. The only place it’s possible to tweak or change our past is in our imaginations.

It’s not always possible to finish that which we have left unfinished at some earlier stage our life. The past is what it is and will forever be so.

But we have today. We can learn from our mistakes. There are steps we can take to ensure those mistakes are not repeated. We can change.

Life is what we choose to make of it.
