It’s important to know and understand that we all have limits, the two most obvious being physical and emotional.
There are things we are unable to do. To push ourselves beyond our limits is to invite setback and injury. Although unintentional, we can hurt ourselves.
That threat throws the focus back onto self-care.
But while we are restricted by our limits we are not necessarily defined by them. That’s because limits can be tested and, by being tested, they can be expanded.
There is always room for improvement. We can change habits that improve our strength and physical fitness. We can look inside ourselves and find ways to become more caring and compassionate, bolstering and improving our mental wellbeing.
The person we were yesterday does not have to be the person we are today. We can always be a better version of ourselves.
But there is work involved. We have to understand where we are before we can decide where it is that we want to be.
Planning must be followed by action. One without the other is no more than a recipe for stagnation.
The good news is that any action – whether on the physical or emotional front – does not have to be dramatic. In fact incremental change is the most sustainable.
And while moving forward may involve small steps, the same can be said for sliding backward.
Change can be subtle. What we do or fail to do determines the direction.
