We may be in the present but we live with the past. We have memories, stories of times that were. And our memories are very specific because our perception of events differs from that of others.
The way we remember events and people is personal. Often it is linked with the way we coped with the bad and enjoyed the good at the time of the event or occasion.
But we do forget. And we do sometimes mis-remember. Our heads and our hearts have limited storage capacity.
That makes it all the more important to be in the moment at the time of the moment.
Adoption of that attitude boosts the importance of today. It will be too late when our today becomes our yesterday.
No amount of re-examination, remorse or regret will change something that happened in the past.
The best we can hope for is that consequence teaches us a lesson that we can carry with us. It makes little sense to continue repeating something that makes us unhappy or something that blocks us from realising our true potential. But there are occasions when we fall into that emotional trap.
Vigilance needs to be maintained. If we lose sight of where we are we’re more likely to lose clarity when it comes to recalling where we’ve been.
Life is a big picture but it is also a collection of snapshots…small pieces that we work to put together in order to be balanced and happy.
It’s important to turn our attention and focus to what is around us at this very moment. The effort we put into getting today as right as it’s possible to be will be rewarded.
And the reward will be ours.
