Memories can be cruel or comforting. They can be accepted or rejected. They can be altered or modified. One thing they cannot be is denied.
Our memory is a record of the fortunate and unfortunate aspects of a life already lived. The past was a reality and that which was real remains real and is impossible to change.
Memories are flashbacks…bits and pieces of who we were and where we where at particular points in time. They can be used as a guide to where we are going or an explanation of where we are right now.
All too often we can be tempted to allow the things that we store in our heads and our hearts to be used as walls and blockages to keep the present at bay. The here and now can become less important than what preceded it. Our focus on the present can become skewed by the echoes of the past.
It’s important to remember that each day is a new beginning…a fresh opportunity to learn and grow. But to do that we must first come to terms with the fact that there are complexities within us that we may never fully understand. And the answers found by others will not necessarily reflect the answers found by ourselves. That thinking should never be used to stifle the search.
Self-acceptance is vital. Without it, change is not possible.
Memories – both good and bad – can be modified or they can be exaggerated but they can never be escaped.
Everything we have experienced up until this very moment in time has helped shape the person we are today.
The person we will be tomorrow is a matter of choice and the choice is ours.
