Any attempt to rewrite, retell or reconstruct the story of our life thus far is most certain to result in a combination of confusion and disappointment.
Different people remember different events in different ways. What was significant and life-changing for one person can be of far less consequence to another. Recollections diverge despite the best efforts to be on the same conversational memory page at the same time. Agreement is rarely general. Rather, in comes in patches.
There are some things we are simply unable to recall despite the fact that we can accept that we were there at that point in time.
Much of that can be attributed to the uniqueness of the individual. Small wonder then that perceptions vary.
The point that we should never ignore is that the past is in the past. That chapter of our lives has been lived.
That which was done can never be undone. We can draw lessons from the past in a bid to at least attempt to ensure that there is no repetition of past mistakes. Learning and growth is always possible.
Whether we choose to accept it or not, the person we were last year is not the person were are today.
Where change is possible inevitability is disempowered. And change is always possible.
Every day is a fresh opportunity. It’s a matter of deciding to reach out and embrace opportunities as they present themselves.
Accepting where we are and where we would like to be is the first step. Then comes the responsibility of working on strategies that will get us from one point to another.
Change does not have to be monumental. Small steps, repeated, may be all that is needed. But it must start sometime and some place.
