Hooray For Today

Life is full of surprises. At its best a surprise is simply something unexpected or not anticipated. At its worst a surprise can be a shock.

There is no way to prepare ourselves for every eventuality. It’s not possible to be ready for anything. Living a life of hyper-vigilance would be to invite mental and physical exhaustion.

So we sit and wait, knowing something is coming but not knowing what it will be.

Unfortunately that attitude is the basis of anxiety because anticipation is all too often linked with fear.

It’s all too easy to become anxious when we allow imagination to guide our thinking. Concern – left unchallenged – can grow into grand and all-consuming proportions clouding proper and sensible interpretation of the space we occupy.

Often the very best we can manage is to expect the unexpected…accept the fact that situations and circumstances will arise which will catch us off guard.

The most vital aspect of a surprise is not the shock itself but how we react to it. What we do with what we’re handed will determine the direction our life will take.

Fearing the future – as well as regretting the past – can rob us of the joy of life. We can allow yesterdays or tomorrows to ruin today. The fact is that today is all we have.

The here and now is reality; the rest is speculation and anticipation.

We get to choose what we will do with whatever life throws at us – good or bad.

We start by examining what we have and who we are. It’s only by understanding where we are that we can begin to find peace among the confusion.

Today is a very important day.
