Reliance on prediction and preference is unwise. What we want and how we see ourselves getting what we want can rob us of the ability to manoeuvre when we need that ability the most.
There is a lot of repetition throughout life. There is also a lot of ducking and weaving. It’s important to know the most suitable tactic to use and when it will most advantage us.
Preparation is important but nothing beats understanding…understanding of who we are, where we are and why we are. Therein lies the task and the challenge. And it’s one we can accept or refuse to acknowledge.
It’s when we reach an understanding of ourselves that we can process that which is happening to us and through us and be reasonably assured that our reaction will be the right one at the right time.
Different situations may draw different reactions. There are times when we will surprise ourselves by what we feel and how we act. In the moment we may not be able to fully understand. Usually the passage of time makes things clearer.
Reflection is important but it brings with it the threat of self-retribution. We can judge ourselves too harshly and condemn self-generated words and actions that lead to regret. Far better to look for the lesson than settle for the pain.
We can expect or anticipate our reactions to a range of situations. But when confronted by sudden change we also have to deal with shock.
There’s a need to understand that one of the few certainties in life is uncertainty.
We know what happened yesterday and we can think about tomorrow’s possibilities. That leaves us with today and its potential.
We can have definition and peace in the moment. But only if we allow ourselves that freedom.
