It’s easy to believe that what we think locks us into being the person we are. But that is too simple. Why we think what we think is vitally important. The what and the why in combination result in the who.
Change and growth are always possible. We can choose to accept or choose to challenge.
When it comes to the delicate matter of who we know and accept as the person we are it can be altogether too easy to accept that it was all predetermined… that it’s not possible to change a predicted outcome…that what is was meant to be and nothing can be done to change it. That is the soft option and it sidesteps the responsibility of accepting consequence.
The hard option is to get to know ourselves. The reward is self-acceptance and an understanding that gives us the scope and the vision to become a better version of the person we are.
We have the freedom to change those things about our personality and behaviour that we may determine to be unacceptable or dislikable. But freedom and will are poles apart. The freedom to be self-determining is there for the taking. The will comes at a cost.
We think what we choose to think and we are who we permit ourselves to be. While growth and maturity is generally expected it cannot be forced.
The ultimate decision, the choice of direction and the focus of our head and heart is ours and ours alone.
