Avoidance is not the answer. If there is an elephant in the room there is an elephant in the room. Pretending otherwise is living in self denial. There can be no satisfaction without action, no getting done without the doing. And yet, all too often, we choose the path of least resistance.
The easy option goes to great lengths to present itself as the most desirable alternative. The simpler the argument and its presentation, the more prepared we are to accept it. Rather than taking action now and in the moment we know and opt for the temporary bliss offered by ignorance. We take the road less troubled.
But there is a danger in seeing procrastination as preferable. When we avoid the situations that make us anxious nothing is resolved. In fact we may well be preventing ourselves from doings those things that need to be done. The need persists. Anxiety increases. The elephant grows ever larger.
The simple truth – however unpalatable – is that facing those things that make us anxious can reduce our anxiety. Theory is one thing…action something completely different. We can make a change.
It starts with small steps. It begins with challenging ourselves to be brave. It takes time but the end result could be learning to stretch our emotional and psychological boundaries and managing our fears.
Help is at hand. The only thing needed is the courage to ask and accept.
