Far too much of our valuable emotional energy is spent lamenting past mistakes. Equally, far too much of that same energy is spent being concerned about the future.
We all have a past and we all hope to have a future. We know where we have been and we can predict where it is that we would like to go. Apart from the lessons learned there is little benefit in either reimagining history or attempting to relive it. And there is nothing to be gained from the potential perils of prognostication. That which was belongs to then and there. That which will be sits under the umbrella of if and when.
What we have left is here and now. The time we spend reflecting or projecting robs us of the time and energy available for being…and being is living and existing in the moment.
Every moment of being is precious and should be enjoyed. But that pleasure and the satisfaction it embraces does not happen in and of itself. It takes a willingness to be involved. It takes the effort of deliberate recognition. It means seeing what we have and understanding what it means in that moment. We have to be part of what is happening both through us and to us. Awareness is the key to appreciation. Awareness, however, is a choice.
There is no bliss in ignorance and no joy in refusal. Looking away from what is in front of us is not the answer. And closed eyes result in closed minds and closed hearts.
Life can be as difficult as we make it for ourselves.
