A Tale To Tell

Everyone has a story to tell…a story of who we were, who we are and who we hope to become.

Each story is as unique as its teller and each story has elements of defeat, victory, hope and despair.

But even though the story is ours and ours alone some people choose not to tell it. They carry the weight of their story within themselves.

It’s in carrying that weight and keeping our story hidden that we create stress and anxiety. We add difficulty to our daily existence.

An untold story comes with unresolved issues; struggles, drama and pain. We may be able to keep our story within ourselves but it is impossible to keep our story from ourselves. We can shut out the world but wherever we go we are still there with ourselves.

An untold story not only brings with it the threat of psychological issues but there can also be physical symptoms. The pain in our head and our heart can find expression in pain and illness.

For the sake of our general wellbeing it’s important to give voice to our story. It’s in the telling that pressure and tension can be released. In short, we feel better for the telling.

First, however, we need to establish an acceptable level of trust. We may be willing to tell but there are many people who may not be willing to listen. Not every friendship or relationship is a safe place. Some can be toxic. Care should be taken to ensure emotion does not cloud common sense when it comes to finding the right person to talk to and with.

In acknowledging that we have a story to tell we must accept that those around us have a similar burden. They too may want to be heard. They too may crave the peace that can come after the telling.

It’s one thing to hear but it’s another thing entirely to listen. We should ensure that we know the difference.
