Keep Self Off The Shelf

Self care is anything but selfish. And it’s a long way from self-serving or being selfcentred.

The problem is that people who take more than they are prepared to give are all too ready to aim unfair and unreasonable accusations at those around them.

Guilt-tripping is a tool used to sow the seeds of self-doubt.

The result is that even those with the very best of intentions can find themselves in a place where they begin to question the honesty of their own motivation.

Over-thinking can be destructive because it generates confusion. We can work ourselves into a mental state which shuts down common sense and compassion. We can lose perspective.

It’s for those reasons that we should all ensure that we keep investing in ourselves…that we resist the suggestion that it’s necessary to put self on the shelf.

One of the most worthwhile and important things we can do is to ensure our own reserves are not left ignored to the point where they become depleted.

Put simply, we have to put on our own gas mask and do it first if we are to have any chance of saving the person sitting right next to us.

If we make the conscious effort to step back, rethink and regroup we are better equipped to be in the moment and make the most of each and every day not only for ourselves but for others.

We have to make a friend of the person we are and treat that friend with kindness and respect. There’s nothing selfish about that.
