The Problematic Past

The past can be seen as either a series of milestones or a collection of millstones. The milestones point the way forward while the millstones hold us back. Living our best life means finding the balance between the two.

It’s impossible to be without having been but, all too often, we allow what was to dictate what is.

The good news is that we get to choose and every new day offers us a fresh opportunity to re-assess.

The past will always be a part of our present, for better or for worse. We learn from our mistakes and we grow though our successes. The worst of the life we living today is in large part attributable to historical negativity that we refuse to release.

Anxiety is both a physical and an emotional response to a threat or a perceived threat. While both normal and necessary anxiety, left unaddressed, can have a cumulative effect. And we can continue to hurt ourselves by holding on to our history. Anxiety can have many layers.

It’s important to identify triggers from the past and the present that ramp up our anxiety. Acknowledging the cause is a vital step towards management of the problem.

We must accept that we will never reach a care-free or a worry-free state. At the same time we must understand that it is possible to unpack our personal grief case and lighten the load. More than that, it is essential.
