For many of us, the sound of silence is deafening and it’s never louder than when we are alone.
Even if there is no noise around us there will always be noise within us. It’s possible to shut out the world or to feel we have been shut out by the world but we can never escape the person that we are. We are at the centre of our own world. Total isolation is simply not possible.
We need other people so we can more clearly define who we are and who we want to be.
Loneliness is one of the major causes of mental fatigue and, if ignored, can deteriorate into mental illness.
It’s when we are left alone for extended periods of time with nothing but the confusion of thoughts going around in our heads that we can be at our most vulnerable.
We need the mental and physical stimulus of company. There’s strength to be gained from conversation. There’s power to be drawn from people.
Not all company is good company. Nor is every relationship a good relationship. But we should not allow that to stop us from trying.
We never stop learning. Both head and heart continue to require our attention.
We need each other. More than that we have a duty to ourselves to put effort into making the life we live for as long as we live it the best life possible.
That’s the ultimate responsibility.
