While most of us understand that without change there can be no growth, there’s still a fear of the unknown and the untested. That can result in reluctance to move from where we are in our circumstances or relationships to another place.
Throughout our life we will miss opportunities because we fear that which we have never experienced. We will choose to stay put rather than step out…and there’s a very real reason for that. Caution is always the preferable option when recklessness is the alternative.
But the point often missed is that past experiences do not have to dictate future outcomes. It’s necessary, however, to learn the lessons of our own history. Repetitive behaviour will bring nothing more than repetitive results. If what we know and where we are brings us comfort and joy there may be no need for radical change. But if what we know and where we are brings us pain, suffering and uncertainty there is room for considerable improvement.
There’s no doubt change can be painful and that prospect alone can be enough to deter many. And we should avoid making change for change sake. That may mean we stand to lose more than we gain.
We should never lose sight of the fact that effective and lasting change starts with us. We have the power and the responsibility.
