Throughout our lifetime there are many occasions when an opportunity presents and we find ourselves scrambling to avoid rather than embrace it.
It may be that we are seriously risk averse or it could simply be that we are generally apathetic. The point is that we can too often miss the chance to take a chance.
The short-term result can be disappointment, the long-term effect can be regret.
The problem with regret is that it mires the present by keeping us anchored in the past. Our thinking can be overwhelmed by an avalanche of “if onlys.” Imagining what our life could have been detracts from the life we are living.
There will always be things we should have done and things we could have done better. But it’s when thoughts of what might have been overwhelm thoughts of what can be that we run the risk of losing direction.
There is no such thing as a perfect life and a perfect life story but even the worst can be made better. Accepting the fact that it’s not possible to change the past does not mean that today cannot be an improvement on yesterday. We get to choose whether we re-read and repeat the worst of what has been or re-write and re-imagine what our future can be.
Our time starts now.
