The Connection Addiction

So sophisticated and intrusive has communication become that we can run but it’s no longer possible to hide.

The problem is that we crave the connection that drives us to distraction. The need to know has become an addiction. We all suffer from the fear of missing out. Knowledge may well be strength but the getting of wisdom can be a debilitating experience.

Little wonder then that we have come to accept anxiety as part of our daily ritual. It’s the trade off for keeping informed and in touch. The bridge between the unknown and the known is often illuminated by fear and distorted by both information and misinformation. But, rather than being a bridge too far, it’s accepted without question and often without preparation or care.

A clear indication that we have pushed ourselves beyond our limits is when anxiety descends into depression. Far better then to avoid that trap by making the conscious effort to unplug frequently.

A break from electronics and social media could mean the difference between clarity and confusion.

Studies have shown that taking time out from work-related communication during non-work hours had close links to employee recovery and health. It’s not difficult to see how there would be similar results in a social setting.

We owe it to ourselves to regularly stop, step back, breathe and refocus.
