A Life Less Ordinary

It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the ordinary; to be muted by the mundane; to surrender to the standard.

Accepting what is for no other reason than it exists is to consciously choose to settle for less. The everyday should not be allowed to become our every day.

So much of what we encounter lacks challenge and spectacle. So much of what happens to us and around us goes both unnoticed and unquestioned. We dismiss it as being of little consequence.

It’s when we adopt the same attitude to what happens through us that we take the greatest risk. It’s when we discount our own potential that we buy into the lie that we lack importance as individuals.

The truth is that we are enough. We can make a difference…a difference by ourselves to us…a difference though ourselves to others. Acceptance of that truth is essential because acceptance leads to action and action to change. We all have the ability and the capacity to become better versions of ourselves. It’s both a challenge and a responsibility.

Attitude is central. We can improve our own attitude and quality of life by looking for the extra in the ordinary. It’s there to be found. Proof positive of the extra is our own existence. We are so much more than that which is ordinary.

The extra in the ordinary may not always be immediately obvious. Some days it can take time and effort to find. And when we find it – no matter how small it may be – the benefit depends on our attitude. Only we can decide. The more we concentrate on the extra, the more the ordinary fades away.

The only thing standing between the extra and the ordinary and preventing it becoming the extraordinary in our lives is ourselves.
