We all live in a bubble of our own creation. We have set our own boundaries, locked in our parameters and established our limitations. We have our own comfort zone. Inside that zone we can have reasonable control over our own doubts and fears. Outside that zone lies the unknown.
We are where we are because of where we have been. We are who we are because of what we have seen.
There is great security that can be drawn from those things that we know. It’s what we don’t know that results in anxiety.
In too many situations we restrict ourselves by succumbing to the fear of the unknown. Potential goes unrealised and opportunity is ignored. Our true value may never be appreciated or understood by our family, our community or our world, least of all to ourselves.
It’s often been said that knowledge is power. Personal power is self knowledge. The most significant weapon that can be used against the scourge of anxiety is understanding who we are, what we think and why we think it.
Self-examination and reassessment is not self-defeating. We want and need honesty from those around us. We owe ourselves the same consideration.
It’s reassuring to know that when we acknowledge flaws and failings in the way we think or the way we act we can decide to change. It’s entirely and absolutely personal. Just as we formulate our own opinions, so too do we construct our own personality. Real change is only possible in our own hearts and heads.
The future is filled with unpredictability and uncertainty and we are all anxious to one degree or another. But we should never lose sight of the fact that today is nothing more than yesterday’s tomorrow.
We have today and it is incumbent on us all to make the most of it.
