Disappointment with the then and there combined with frustration with the here and now can can rob us of the promise of the future.
It’s altogether too easy to fail to appreciate who we are and what we have just as it’s a simple matter to be critical of a life already lived. We find it too easy to ignore the truth that, at any given point in time, it is what it is and we are who we are.
We can become so obsessed with the detail of what our life is not that we overlook or devalue what our life is making it impossible to appreciate what it can be. That attitude manifests as a major stressor and a source of considerable discomfort in our lives.
The first step on the pathway of change is coming to peace with the way things are. Only then are we able to fully assess our own situation. If we know where we are and we know who we are then it’s so much easier to move forward.
It’s all about self-acceptance. To get to that point it’s essential that we discard the “What ifs” and the “If onlys” from our way of thinking. With understanding comes appreciation and it’s far more important to know and understand ourselves than it is to know and understand others.
The way things are may not be the way we want things to be but it is a start…a foundation to keep building on.
Fulfillment is a comforting but elusive ideal. However that should be no restriction because it is also achieveable.
The individual is responsible as much for his own fulfillment as he is for his own happiness.
We all sit at varying levels. Only we can know which is ours and when we have reached it.
