Much of life is spent lurching between the important and the immaterial, the meaningful and the minor, the worthwhile and the wasted. It can tend to be either one thing or the other and all the while there’s a struggle to find balance.
Every day has 24 hours and every hour is an opportunity. But we often find ourselves tangled in the snare of confusing being busy with being productive. That’s because there’s a tendency to put far too much emotional energy into those things of little consequence.
The trivial trap awaits us all. Concentrating on the inconsequential excuses us from confronting the concerning. At the close of day we know we have spent our time but we’re also aware of the fact that it has not been spent wisely.
It’s important to focus on those things that truly matter while, at the same time, letting go of what does not.
The parts of our life and character that will flourish and prosper are those parts which we give our energy to. The dominant force and the inevitable result are very much determined by what we choose to embrace.
The good news is that it’s never too late to alter our life’s course. We may be disappointed by our past and uncertain about our future but that still leaves us with today. What we do and what we decide today determines our tomorrow. We first must decide whether we want our tomorrow to be detoured by our yesterday or directed by our today.
Having reached a decision it’s then necessary to plot a pathway and move forward. Leaps and bounds may be beyond us. Little steps may be all we can manage.
Progress, however, is dependent on where we concentrate our attention.
Those things that really matter should be our first priority.
