Expecting The Unexpected

Life is filled with the unexpected…both good and bad.

Our most meticulous planning can be reduced to confused rubble and tangled emotions in a heartbeat. On the other hand an unexpected turn of events can lift us out of misery and give us some much needed clarity.

The fact is that something is always happening and something is always about to happen. Anticipation can be either preparation or torment. Acceptance is one thing…fear another thing entirely.

The best we can hope for is to expect the unexpected…to understand that both good and bad things will come our way and that often the timing will be less than convenient.

But along with that expectation it’s important to develop the ability to learn from our experiences. It’s an inescapable truth that the best lessons often come from the hardest days.

We can learn more about ourselves and others through adversity than we learn through advantage. Tough times and experiences can bring out the best in us or the worst in us. The choice is personal. The responsibility is ours. The consequences are real.

Circumstances and people can teach but it is only at an individual level that we can learn. That means being open to the experience, aware of our surroundings…to accept, interpret and adapt.

Life is all about learning and the lessons never end. Each day comes with its own challenges and its own blessings. We can choose our point of focus. We can work on making ourselves happy or allowing ourselves to be sad.

The initial step involves a commitment to putting effort into becoming the best version of ourselves. We must first want to be that person for ourselves. The benefits will flow to all around us.

The process is not without pain…the rewards are life-changing.
