Knowing who we are is far less about self-discovery than it is about self-construction.
The who that we are is more connected with the who we allow ourselves to be than the who we believe that we should be. And we are responsible for the who that we have allowed ourselves to become.
Our who is made up of our what, our when, our where and our how.
We are all a work in progress. Our building blocks are drawn from the personalities, standards, beliefs and motivations of those around us and those who have gone before us.
What we are building is for those who will come after us.
The who we are should not be taken lightly. As much as we have a duty of care to who we are we have an obligation to piece together the very best who we can become.
What that involves is becoming deliberate in our choice of mentors, cautious in the selection of our sources of information, avoiding complacency and developing a clear and unfettered understanding of why we think what we think.
If we fail to understand and accept the who that we are then becoming the who we know we should be or the who we aspire to be becomes unnecessarily problematic.
A better version of the who that we have become is always available to us. That should always be seen as a motivation, not a frustration. We learn, we grow, we change. More than that, we choose.
We owe it to ourselves to become the best who that we can be. The objective is to ensure that the who that we are today is a improvement on the who we were yesterday.
Our real who is not superficial…it goes to the heart…it’s our being.
We need to get to know the who we are so we can prepare the who we will become.
