All of us have a past. It’s everything that happened then that has led us to our present. We are who we are now because we were who we were then.
Past experiences – both good and bad – are undeniably part of the person we have become. It’s not possible to rewrite history. It is, however, all too easy to relive history…to become locked in a time and space long gone.
Ensnared in their past, trapped in time, many people live unfulfilled and unsatisfying lives. Their today is anchored to their yesterday. Unable to understand and appreciate their present, those individuals are robbed of their capability of anticipating a future.
We all come with baggage. We accumulate it as we wend our way through life. It’s what we do with that baggage – how we carry those bits we are unable to discard and what we choose to leave behind – that helps determine our happiness.
And that is the key point. Choice. We get to decide for ourselves. Friends, relatives and loved ones can suggest and even urge change. But each and every one of us is an individual. Until we decide there can be no lasting change.
It’s exciting to think that, having made the decision to change, we can move from our today into our tomorrow. It is within our imagination, power and strength to become a better version of ourselves. No-one else can do it for us.
We can choose to be happy. We can decide to be content. We can set pain aside and replace it with promise. We can write our own fresh story…line by line…sentence by sentence…chapter by chapter..
Change is not easy. It can be a struggle and it can be painful. But it can be achieved by degrees. And it is rewarding.
