The Pursuit Of Improvement

When it comes to the issues of human spirit, attitude and behaviour there’s always room for improvement. It’s always possible to be better today than we were yesterday and not as good as we have the potential to be tomorrow.

Given that, it’s probably never possible to be the very best version of ourselves…but that’s no excuse for not trying. Life is an ongoing voyage of self-discovery.

Enhancement is progress. Anything less is wasted time and promise. We neither know the time we have nor do we have any real understanding or appreciation of what we can achieve. Some people will live a short time and achieve great things. Others will live a long life and have minimal impact on their surroundings. The reason for that disparity is clear and simple…choice.

We all have the capacity for change. It’s our choice whether we change up or change down. We can decide to take a negative in our lives and put effort into turning it into a positive. By the same token we can take a positive in our lives and tear it into useless  pieces. We can move forward or stagnate. We can become the victims of our past mistakes or the architects of our promising future.

There’s a certain reassurance, if not comfort, in the knowledge that there’s nothing we can experience that’s new. Someone, somewhere and at some time has gone through or is going through a matching  set of circumstances. There is much to be learned from the wisdom of others.

The first step is to be open to change; to realise that tomorrow brings with it new promise and new opportunity; and then to understand and accept that dramatic change is a rarity.

In a great many cases the effort of  putting one foot in front of the other and consistently moving forward is reward enough.
